Our history is a rich and far-reaching one, closely intertwined with many great names, cases and ‘legal firsts’ in Ireland.
The firm was established 1933 by local astute businessman and lawyer Ignatius Houlihan, whose wife was one of the first female lawyers in Ireland. The family’s sons joined the business – with Michael heading up litigation and Desmond focussing on commercial law. Our firm’s close involvement with local authorities and insurance companies can be traced back to these early days – when, in 1973, Michael Houlihan became solicitor for Clare County Council and established his name with many successful litigation cases.
The Firm Today
Today the firm is known as MHP and is a nationally recognised legal practice with extensive experience advising local authorities, statutory bodies, and institutional clients across Ireland. Mr John Shaw, Managing Partner is the current County Solicitor for Clare County Council having been reappointed to that role through an open competitive tender process in 2006.
We act for a number of leading insurance companies as well as Local Authorities nationwide. We act for a number of public and private companies while we also have a large private client base.
Our office in Ennis occupies three Georgian-style buildings at 9/10/11 Bindon Street, Ennis. Our Limerick office is located in Bedford Row, in a building which still retains the original facade of the Methodist Church which once occupied the site.
We’re Part of the Fabric of Law
MHP has a long-standing association with the Law Society of Ireland. In 1984, Michael Houlihan was President of the Society, as was John Shaw in 2014. We are committed to contributing to and having close involvement with the legal community. Partner, Sinéad Nunan is a lecturer and tutor with the Law Society of Ireland. Leona McMahon is a member of the Law Society Conveyancing Committee.
“Ours is a company that has grown up with the development of law in Ireland, and our history is part of its fabric.”
